William Gay
Cleanup Champion (Birmingham)
The Covid lockdowns gave us all the time and opportunity to better explore our local communities. We all benefited from our green and open spaces. When I retired from nearly 30 years of teaching History, I wanted to do something which enabled me to continue to enjoy the outdoors and began this journey of striving to make community litter a thing of the past.
My holidays are always spent revelling in the beauty of our planet – be it sailing or camping or walking or cycling – and now I am able to combine volunteering with the Canal & River Trust (who do an awful lot of litter picking!) with working for CleanupUK as a Community Champion for the ‘bostin’ city of Birmingham. I am dedicated to facilitating anyone who wants to litter pick across Birmingham via our community hubs and I will do everything to champion the cause of litter free neighbourhoods across the country.
