Would love to join up with any other local volunteers. Whilst I’m happy going out alone, sometimes a bit of company is nice.

3.5 hours, 15km and 20000 steps later (going back and forth), we have 5 bags, 5 NO canisters, a gate pole, and a wheel trim. They’ve cut back all the grass verges on the country lanes which has revealed crazy amounts of litter, unfortunately a lot of it is now shredded 😭. Made an early start this morning, 5-bags in and I feel like I’ve barely made a dent, had to leave it for the day as the traffic built up and it’s not the safest road.

Thought I’d do a quick maintenance run round the fields, a pick with a view kind of thing. But 3 hours, 8.6 km and 3 bags later (1 full of dumped carpet) I was done, not with litter but I was too hot, only had two hands and I was stuck in the middle of the fields away from any council lampposts. It’s times like this when you really wish you had a trolley! But I did get to finally see a pair of ravens that I’ve always heard but never seen. I then get out of the fields to be greeted by a load of rubbish spread out because residents had left their black bags out, so the foxes and birds had a free for all. Rubbish collection isn’t due till tomorrow and they put them out on Friday so a neighbour told me.

Four bags, three NOS canisters (only two showing because another fellow picker took the other in her trolley) collected today after a couple of weeks off on holiday. A nice steady three and a half hours session, covering more than 10000 steps (my watch ran out of battery before I made it home, so i don’t know the final total). Went out early to beat the heat but was starting to feel it by the time I got home. Again most of my haul was from the country lanes which is disappointing. And as I was struggling back with multiple bags, canisters and a petrol can, witnessed a rear end shunt because a driver wasn’t paying attention at a busy junction.

A soggy morning, 12000 steps, 3 hours, 4 bags and 4 NOS canisters later, home with a cup of tea to dry out. Would have been more bags but one of the areas I picked was a notorious spot by some community bins. So I managed to get a lot back in the bins as they were relatively empty for once. Also cleaned up one of the local playgrounds (didn’t get a before as there were kids present), covered in bottles, wrappers, people dinners from previous evenings, etc, filling a bag. What gets me is there was a bin less than 20 steps away.

Only three bags and one NOS canister collected today, as well as two new fly tips reported, but I was on a time crunch as well as trying to beat the heat! Disappointedly most of today’s haul came from the country lanes, where it would seem that people have just been emptying their cars as they drive past. Theres no McDonald’s, KFC or Tim Hortons, etc for more than a mile and you certainly can’t walk this way to them, so that’s the only way it ends up in our hedgerows. It’s a shame people have little respect for where we live.

Only covered half the route I’d planned to today after filling 5 bags, reporting some dumped waste and walking almost 15km (back and forth). There was a lot of litter concentrated in a few areas which meant I didn’t cover the full route down past the country park. Plus the heavens then opened and typically I was no where near any shelter. So what is there to do but carry on!

Solo pick, walked 5.2miles over what was really a 2mile area (both sides). A stretch of less than half a mile on Hasbury Road is not great for litter, two bags done on that stretch aline. It’s also become a hotspot for fly tipping, which have been reported multiple times, but still remain and is attracting more.
