What Is the Halloween Grot Spot Challenge?
Our Halloween Grot Spot Challenge is a fun way to turn a messy area into a clean and welcoming space while taking part in a spooky Halloween activity. Choose a grot spot in your local area, take a before photograph and then see how much litter you can safely collect.
You can set yourself different challenges depending on how much litter you find:
- 5 pieces of litter — a spooky starter challenge.
- 10 pieces of litter — you're getting into the Halloween spirit!
- 20 pieces of litter — you're a serious Halloween Litter Hunter.
- 50 pieces of litter — the MEGA GROT SPOT CHALLENGE!
Once you've finished, take an after photograph and compare your transformation.
Turn a Fright into a Delight
Uh-oh! The Grot Monsters have been dropping litter everywhere! Your mission is to find a grot spot that needs some attention and help turn it from frightening to fantastic. Put on your Halloween costume, grab your litter-picking equipment and get ready to hunt for litter.
As you pick, imagine that every piece of rubbish is another Grot Monster you've managed to banish! You could even give your grot spot a spooky name before you begin and see how dramatically you can transform it.
Halloween Litter Hunt
Keep your eyes peeled as you search for different types of litter.
Tick each one you find:
- A Ghostly Drinks Cup
- A Haunted Sweet Wrapper
- A Creepy Food Packet
- A Mummy's Tissue
- A Monster's Can
- A Witch's Bottle
- Something Really Spooky!
You never know what you might discover hiding in your grot spot.
Remember, only collect litter that is safe to pick up and use gloves or litter pickers where provided.
Before you start picking, take a photograph of your grot spot...
Try to capture the litter and the area around it so you can clearly see the difference after your clean-up.
This is your BEFORE picture!
It's a great way to show just how much of a transformation your Halloween Litter Hunt has created.
Show Your Transformation
Once you've completed your challenge, take another photograph of your freshly cleaned grot spot.
This is your AFTER picture!
Compare your before and after photographs and see how much you've transformed the area.

Litter-Picking Safety
Halloween costumes and spooky challenges are great fun, but safety always comes first. Only collect litter that is safe to pick up. Never touch anything sharp, dangerous or that you are unsure about.
Remember to:
- Use gloves or litter pickers where provided.
- Only collect litter that is safe to handle.
- Stay within the agreed activity area.
- Keep costumes and accessories safely out of the way while litter picking.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after completing your litter-pick.
If you find something dangerous or suspicious, leave it where it is and tell the activity organiser.
